About Us
Norfolk EDA was established in 1976 to provide a safe and comfortable environment for anyone in over 16 years old in Norfolk who suffers from anorexia, bulimia, compulsive or binge eating disorder, or related issues. Our confidential services are free or low-cost, and are available to all sufferers, their families, friends and professionals involved in their care. Although we accept formal referrals from GPs and other professionals, you are also welcome to self-refer, and there are no formalities or permission required to access our services.
Our holistic approach recognises that people with eating disorders have complex needs that extend beyond the "food & weight" issues to all aspects of the illnesses. We offer empathetic support at all times, respect the right of each person to choose whether or not to participate in any helping process, and work with those who wish to address emotional change and development without returning to food-based coping mechanisms.
We have experienced, professional staff and trained volunteers. We work in liaison with other multi-discipliary services including consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, specialist therapists and nutritional advisers.
We are a "not-for-profit" organisation. Historically, our free or low-cost services are funded mainly by Norwich Primary Care Trust, but we are not part of the NHS. We also rely on grants from trusts, donations from companies, and the generosity of private individuals.
We hope you find the way towards what you need and will benefit from the services we offer.
Norfolk EDA is:
- Not part of the NHS
- Not a private (profit-making) organisation
- Not a treatment centre
- Not a clinic
Why does Norfolk EDA charge fees?
For many years Norfolk EDA has provided its services free of charge,
with nominal fees for counselling. Now it is much more difficult
to raise funding and we have made the difficult decision that we need
to cover the cost of the services we provide. In this way we will
be able to continue with what has been tried and tested, and continue
to develop new services in response to the needs of our clients.
